I enjoyed your article Polls Apart NATURE vol. 521 no. 7551 May 14, 2015 page 126.  Indeed research courage, or lack thereof, is a real thing.  Cassandra was cursed with knowing the truth but nobody would believe it.  It is worse to know the truth and lack the courage to speak.  I have collected a lot of material (http://www.nobabies.net/A%20January%20summary%20for%202015.html) indicating that infertility in an urban setting or in any social group more than a very few hundred is an existential threat.  I even was involved in a paper (Fluctuation of fertility with number in a real insect population and a virtual population M.L. Herbert  & M.G. Lewis African Entomology 21(1): 119–125 (2013)) showing that the effect is real in fruit flies although of course the numbers are different.  This now threatens the whole world.  I don’t mind looking like a fool, but few indeed of the hundreds I have reached out to dare even reply.  So far as I can tell they wet themselves and run away squealing.  Here is to the hope that courage returns to science.  We had it once, unless that was all myth.
